Why screen incoming transfers and not outgoing ones?
Most AML tools flag outgoing transactions — meaning the money has already moved by the time you know there's a problem. Electrum-IS flips this model: by screening inbound transfers at the mempool level, you know a sender's risk profile before the funds ever hit your balance. This protects you from unknowingly receiving from a sanctioned address, which creates downstream compliance problems at exchanges and custodians.
How can the screening be free?
Incoming AML screening leverages cached public sanction lists (OFAC, EU, UN) combined with community-maintained address intelligence. Per-scan compute cost is negligible at scale. Our commercial model is built on premium add-ons — PDF export, API access for developers, and enterprise graph analysis. Incoming screening stays free, permanently.
What happens when a transfer is flagged?
Risk scores below 30 are credited automatically with a silent log entry. Scores between 30 and 69 trigger an in-app alert requiring your explicit confirmation before crediting. Scores 70 and above quarantine the transfer and deliver a full AML report — you decide whether to accept or reject with full information in front of you. Control stays with you at every tier.
Is Electrum-IS custodial?
No. Electrum-IS is fully non-custodial. Private keys and seed phrases are generated on your device and never leave it. AML screening operates exclusively on the sender's public address metadata — information that is already visible to the entire blockchain. Nothing about your own keys, seed phrase, or balance is ever transmitted to our infrastructure.
Which blockchains are supported?
The initial beta targets Ethereum and EVM-compatible networks (Polygon, Arbitrum, BNB Chain, Base) where address-level AML data is most mature. Bitcoin and Solana screening are on the development roadmap. Self-custody across a wider set of chains is available regardless of AML coverage status.
Who is behind Electrum-IS?
Electrum-IS is an independent security-focused project built on the conviction that AML compliance tools should not be an institutional luxury. Ordinary self-custody users deserve to know the risk profile of who is sending them money — for free. The project is currently in private prototype stage with beta access opening shortly.
